Inside the Start Gate: What First-Time Racers Should Expect
Signing up for your first downhill race is exciting.
It’s also a little nerve-wracking.
Where do I go?
What happens at check-in?
Am I going to miss staging?
What if I don’t know anyone?
Let’s break it down.
If you’re lining up at your first Mountain States Cup in 2026 — here’s exactly what to expect.
1. Arrival + Check-In
When you arrive at the venue, the first stop is registration / USAC check-in.
You’ll need:
-
A valid USA Cycling license (annual or one-day)
-
A photo ID
-
To sign your resort/venue waiver (digital or on-site if needed)
At check-in you’ll receive:
-
Your race plate
-
Weekend schedule reminder
Our staff will help you if you’re unsure about anything. No one is expected to have this dialed their first time. If you’re under 18, make sure a parent/guardian is present or that waivers are fully completed beforehand.
2. Practice Day
Friday and Saturday is practice.
Here’s how it works:
-
You load the lift with your bike
-
Ride to the top
-
Drop in when the course marshal signals during your designated practice window.
-
Repeat
You can stop on the side of the course during practice to inspect lines — just move safely off the race line and look uphill before restarting.
This is your time to:
-
Learn the track
-
Figure out braking points
-
Dial suspension
-
Manage nerves
There are no mandatory features, but this is championship-level terrain. If you’re unsure about a section, stop and look at it. Smart is fast.
